Why We’re Still Dreaming of Four Poster Beds

At VSP Interiors, the four poster bed is far more than just a nod to history—it’s a signature piece, a personal sanctuary, and a timeless emblem of elegance. Henriette von Stockhausen, founder and creative director of VSP, has long championed these beds for their unrivalled ability to transform a room.

“Historically, four poster beds were a sign of wealth. The more elaborate the hangings or carvings, the richer the owner. They were dressed in the finest silks, trimmings—and occasionally even precious stones.”

Today, four poster beds still carry a quiet grandeur, but their role is equally about comfort and atmosphere. “We do a lot for clients who want a sanctuary—a room within a room,” she explains. Particularly in country houses with soaring ceilings, they help anchor a space and create a sense of cosy enclosure.

Henriette’s approach balances heritage with modern comfort. She favours darker hues inside the bed for that womb-like, secure feel and often incorporates antique fabrics or a tapestry back for a vintage effect.

“I love using historical references, but I never want it to feel too ‘done’.”

Whether it’s a full set of curtains or a simple half tester, every detail is considered—from starburst ceiling treatments to the choice of fabric inside and out. And while some beds are bespoke VSP designs—wrapped in fabric, painted, mirrored or metal—Henriette also champions Beaudesert’s exquisite range. “Their faux bamboo four poster is divine,” she says, “but the Lit à la Polonaise is a personal favourite—romantic, playful, and utterly enchanting.”

So, are four poster beds still in style? At VSP Interiors, they never went out.
